Dance film festival opens at Abertay’s Hannah Maclure Centre
The new ‘Jump Cut’ festival of dance and film opens tonight at the University of Abertay Dundee’s Hannah Maclure Centre.
A week-long series of exciting events includes performances, an interactive dance and costume design workshop, screenings of rare and new dance films, and a celebration of community dance that covers everything from breakdance to traditional Indian dance.
The dance companies involved include Scottish Dance Theatre, Scotland’s national contemporary dance company which is part of Dundee Rep, and Dundee-based Smallpetitklein.
Clare Brennan, festival organiser and Curator at the Hannah Maclure Centre, said: “Dundee is an incredibly creative, exciting city to live in – there’s a really thriving artistic culture, and I wanted to champion some of our dance companies and the huge local enthusiasm for dance.
“The films we’ve brought together are absolutely breathtaking. Creative dance can be really mesmerising and beautiful, particularly when it’s well filmed.
“By mixing films and live performances, Jump Cut will give people a real immersion into this incredible performance culture. And it’s for absolutely everyone – from expert enthusiasts to anyone who’s just a bit curious!”
The festival opens on Friday at 7.30pm with a ‘Film and Choreography’ event incorporating talks, screenings and live performances.
Other events include:
- Dundee schools performing from classic musicals on Saturday at 7.30pm followed by a rare chance to see Leonard Bernstein’s timeless classic ‘West Side Story’
- a performance workshop exploring the use of shape and shadow in costume design and dance (Wednesday 25 April, 7.30pm)
- and the grand finale celebrating contemporary dance next Friday at 7.30pm.
All events are in Abertay University’s Hannah Maclure Centre, which is on the top floor of the Student Centre on Bell Street.
