Silent Communication Exhibition opens at Freedom

Silent Communication Exhibition opens at FreedomArtist Rikki O’Neill is the latest local artist to have his work showcased in Freedom Hairdressing in Dundee. Freedom Hairdressing launched the initiative earlier this year allowing local artists to exhibit their work within a busy salon environment. Rikki becomes the 4th artist to participate. Later this month we’ll find out which artists have made the final stage of the Calendar for Maggies competition sponsored by Freedom. This competition invited artists to submit prints for a calendar which will go on sale to celebrate the Maggies Cancer Care Centres 10th year in Dundee and help to raise much needed funds for the centre. Tanya went along to meet Rikki and to find out a little more about his work.

Art Sale inspired by cancer diagnosis

Art Sale inspired by cancer diagnosisARCHITECT Lynn Algar’s cancer diagnosis has inspired an art sale to raise funds for Maggie’s. Lynn is a senior partner with Cre8 who are working with Japanese architect Kengo Kuma on the V & A Dundee. She received so much support from Maggie’s that her friend Nick Burns Cumming, owner of 2020 A:rt in Edinburgh, decided to organise the Art of Giving art sale. He has brought together the work of young artists at the beginning of their careers as a way of raising funds and awareness of Maggie’s Edinburgh. Nick said: “In 2011 my close friend Lynn Algar was diagnosed with cancer. “It came as a huge shock for her and her many friends tried to help in any way possible.“I sat with Lynn through many of her chemo sessions, and admired her utter determination to deal with cancer and keep her life as normal as possible.“The Maggie’s Centre became our ‘recovery place’ where we could relax after her chemo.“A calm place where the staff offer support when required or simply a place to sit and breathe.“We decided early on to hold a party for Lynn when the cancer was behind her, but quickly realised that we ought to do something to help repay the Maggie’s. As my background is the art business, The Art of Giving was born.”

A private viewing of The Art of Giving sale will be held at The Royal College of Physicians Hall, 9 Queen Street, Edinburgh, on Friday 17th August from 6pm while a public viewing will start at 10am on Saturday 18th August 2012.

The sale is supported by almost twenty new upcoming artists based in Scotland. Work includes paintings, prints and sculptures. Fifty per cent of income will go to the Maggie’s fund, with the other 50% returning to the artists. Lynn added: “”Being diagnosed with breast cancer was devastating. I literally felt I had been hit by a bus.

“In the first few weeks I was bombarded with information and discussions on the various treatments I was going to have to undergo.

“Maggie’s staff helped me rationalise everything I was experiencing and helped me focus on what was ahead of me in an atmosphere that is calming and friendly.

“Whilst I was surrounded by a great medical team, friends and family the support from the Maggie’s team was amazing and I could not imagine having to have gone through the last year without them being there.”
