Future of education on show to MSP at Abertay
Major advances in the research and teaching of computer games technology and environmental science were shown today (Monday 14 November) to the Convener of the Scottish Parliament’s Education and Culture Committee.
Stewart Maxwell MSP visited the University of Abertay Dundee after seeing computer games developed by Abertay students at a recent Scottish Parliament event organised by Universities Scotland.
Mr Maxwell said: “I was delighted to receive the invitation to visit Abertay University, and I have been astonished by the multidisciplinary work going on here. I am very impressed by the impact that this research is having and will have on the Scottish economy.”
Mr Maxwell met students on the Professional Masters in Game Development, who work in the open-plan UK Centre for Excellence in Computer Games Education, a facility supported by Scottish Government investment.
The Centre for Excellence is developing the high-level skills required by the future leaders of Scotland’s computer games industry, and is also supporting the development of new businesses in the industry.
The MSP also met staff in Abertay University’s two environmental science research centres – SIMBIOS (Scottish Informatics and Mathematics Biology and Statistics Centre) and UWTC (Urban Water Technology Centre).
SIMBIOS is at the forefront of research into soil structures and mechanisms – a vital area of research as the world prepares to meet the challenge of massively increasing food supplies to meet the growth in the planet’s human population. UWTC is leading new methods of planning for sustainable water supplies and urban development around the world.
The visit concluded with demonstrations of innovative scientific research, including cancer drug discovery, powered by computer games technology in Abertay’s HIVE (Human Interactive Virtual Environment) 3D computing laboratory.
