Dundee school pupils complete Abertay mentoring

Secondary school pupils from Dundee’s Braeview Academy received awards tonight  for completing a four-month mentoring scheme at the University of Abertay Dundee.
It is the fourth year that the project has been successfully run, with 23 students undertaking a research project that allowed them to develop independent research, study and team-working skills.
The projects this year covered a wide range of subjects, including Dundee FC, fashion through the decades, Greek and Roman mythology, the history of cars, and Somalian gangs.
Graeme Wallace, Principal Teacher of Guidance at Braeview Academy, said: “This project provides our pupils with an excellent opportunity to experience first-hand a different learning environment and get a real taste of what university life is like.

“We are delighted to be able to work with Abertay to give our S3 pupils this valuable insight and an early introduction to research skills. This year’s programme was supported by high calibre undergraduate students acting as mentors to our own pupils and this aspect is a particular strength of the project.”

The ‘Supporting Able Pupils’ project gives school pupils the opportunity to meet and be mentored by current university students, helping them to understand the importance of their studies and what is required to progress to university.

All the pupils received coaching on presentation skills, ahead of an event in March where they had to present their project and what they had learned.
Lesley Balfour, Student Recruitment Manager at Abertay University, added: “Once again it’s been a delight to work with the very able Braeview Academy pupils and to see how much effort they’ve put into these research projects.
“This partnership has worked for four very successful years because it helps school pupils get a real insight into university life, which can be a great inspiration to them in thinking about their future careers.
“Working with our staff and student mentors is a really rewarding process for us and the pupils, and we warmly congratulate each and every one of them on their achievement.”
